Selling & Communicating via Email

8 Sep

In this busy world, no one has time to read five paragraph emails. They just don’t have time. Your emails, whether it’s internal communiques, messages to customers or prospects, or notes to friends, need to be SUCCINCT.

Because they don’t have time.

  • Your audience doesn’t care about your info, they care how it affects them
  • Communicate why there is an urgency, include a deadline, and a reason
  • Define your purpose in 1-3 sentences at the very beginning of your email
  • Then simplify it with bullets, bullets, bullets
  • Lastly, have a wrap-up close of 1-2 sentences

Your average email has about three seconds to get their attention. When they read your email, they are trying to answer only three questions (200 times a day!):

(1) What is required of me?

(2) Why should I do it? (call to action)

(3) When do I need to do it?

This is simple stuff. You probably know this already, but are you doing it? Can you be more consistent? We usually write the way we talk and that is problematic. Business writing needs to be direct, clear and its sole purpose is to generate action.

Knowing all of the above, I’m honored you took time out of your day to read this blog!

Make every day count~ Drew Schmitz
