People Who Need People – Are the Luckiest People in the World

16 Jul

Do you ever find yourself explaining to someone how to do something over and over again?  Do you ever feel like if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself?  If that’s the case, you don’t have the right people on your team.

For years, I hired people that didn’t do as well as I expected them to. After a while I realized that if my employees weren’t doing a good job, I was simply hiring the wrong people most of the time.  It was my fault.

When you hire the right people, everything becomes easier and more fun.  The way I know someone is the right person for the job is if I can tell them WHAT to do, but not HOW to do it.  Tell smart people the outcome you expect and they will find a way to make it happen.  You don’t have to micromanage these employees, but instead can step back after some good training and let them fly.

How do you do this?  Be precise about what you are looking for and hire slowly.  When interviewing, tell them about your culture and figure out if they fit.  Be specific about what you expect from them and don’t figure it out along the way.  Focus on how you onboard your new hires and train them well.  If they are good at the job and LIKE the role, they will probably produce, stick around and do the right things when you aren’t looking.
